Project N.A.T.U.RE. (New approach for uremic toxins) has been officially launched.
The project, headed by Apulian pharmaceutical company Farmalabor in cooperation with Aferetica Srl (innovative start-up), University of Bari, University of Salento and CNR-ISPA-Lecce, aims to develop and validate clinically an innovative food supplement (a mixture of probiotics, fibers and antioxidants) for the treatment of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD).
The project ranked first on the 118 proposals for the Apulian tender "Aids to support regional technology cluster".
These are the three main steps of Project N.A.T.U.RE:
- selection of the most effective formulation and form for the supplement;
- development of the innovative supplement;
- pilot study on patients with Chronic Kidney Disease, in hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis, monitoring their intestinal microbiota in order to evaluate the effectiveness of the treatment.
The expected results of this treatment concern a slowdown in the disease towards the final stage and a reduction of cardiovascular and metabolic complications.
For this project, the University of Bari and Farmalabor will recruit 10 young researchers (PhD graduates under 35), even returning home after being abroad.
The commitment of Farmalabor in testing new products goes on, thanks to a fruitful synergy between academic and industrial research.
Through a forward-looking R&D strategy, the company shows that it is possible to revitalise the territory only by enhancing its human and material resources.
